The Federal Republic of Germany, located in north-central
Europe, has an area of 137,744 sq. mi. (356,910sq. km.) and a population
of 81.1 million. Capital: Berlin. The economy centers about
one of the world's foremost industrial establishments. Machinery,
motor vehicles, iron, steel, yarns and fabrics are exported.
During the post-Normandy phase of World War II, Allied
troops occupied the western German provinces of Schleswig-
Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia,
Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Wurttemberg,
Bavaria and Saarland. The conquered provinces were divided
into American, British and French occupation zones. Five eastern
German provinces were occupied and administered by the forces
of the Soviet Union.
The post-World War II division of Germany was ended Oct.
3, 1990, when the German Democratic Republic (East Germany)
ceased to exist and its five constituent provinces were formally
admitted to the Federal Republic of Germany. An election Dec.
2, 1990, chose representatives to the united federal parliament
(Bundestag), which then conducted its opening session in Berlin
in the old Reichstag building. Berlin is again the capital of a United
Germany.
